OK THIS! I just wrote an article explaining WHY as a florist with a retail flower shop that sources flowers locally in Baltimore, we've decided for 2026 to ditch Valentine's day. We're actually going to be closed for all of January and February- but V-day is what everyone will be worked up about. It's hard explaining to customers why things need to change- but you're right- I make the rules.

Exactly—and at the same time, you don’t necessarily owe anyone an explanation. Some people will think it’s cool, some people will think your decision is weird, and some (most probably 😅) will feel neutral about it.
I am very happy that I am increasingly daring to say “no” to assignments that do not suit me (anymore). Instead of feeling uncomfortable when I am offered such an assignment, I recommend people who may have the time and space for it. And that makes me happier these days than saying “yes” and wondering not long after: how does this fit in with my intention to spend more time in my studio and just experiment?
