This really resonates with me. I've been working on shifting old money stories and building money confidence over the past few years and have made a great deal of progress. Today I had my eyes checked and got a new eyeglass prescription requiring me to get new eyeglasses. Eyeglass frames and lenses can be very expensive in the US and the last time I needed them I was in a much more precarious financial situation which limited my choices and made me fretful and anxious. Today when I went to choose new frames I was able to choose what I liked and even though I had a budget limit in mind the feeling of choice rather than limitation was enormous and very much on my mind. I found myself congratulating myself for having come to this point and it felt great. When I read this piece about your "mantra" I found myself nodding and smiling.
I really enjoy your writing and frame of mind around business and money. I first "met" you when you were a guest in Alice Sheridan's Connected Artists Club and you introduced me to Substack where I am exploring the writing side of my creative practice and have followed your writing ever since. So I thought I'd say hello and thanks!
Thank you so much for saying “hi” and for commenting Hilary! And for sharing your story: I’m happy to hear that you realised the progress you made and that you celebrated yourself for it :) Have a lovely rest of your day!
Money mindset is huge for people! I’ve seen time and time again how literally the only difference between one person and another - with drastically different incomes - is their baseline assumptions about what is and is not possible. That’s not all, of course action as to follow, but mindset is the door, and you can’t walk through a closed door.
You’re absolutely right! I’ve even noticed with myself that from one day to the next I can feel better or worse even with everything else being the same—it’s so fascinating how our feelings about money can be separate from the actual money we have! Thank you for commenting Rebecca :)
Yup, that's a hard one Julia! Something that helps me if I know I'm going to be having a conversation in which I need to 'ask' is to write a note to myself making it as neutral as possible. So I'd write this phrase to say during the conversation: "If you'd like to book a package, you can do so for X-amount". Doing this again and again makes it easier. Thank you for sharing your thoughts Julia!
I’m sitting here worrying about money, what needs to be paid, and holding my cat who gets frequent UTIs. I get to this email and a sense of calm washes over me. Thank you for sharing this mantra and how it is helping you.
This was an awesome reminder, very relatable. I catch myself reverting all the time. I like your affirmation, I have my own but I like yours, will try it out.
Thank you for commenting Claudette, and I'm glad to hear that this post resonated with you! Do let me know how you get on with the mantra (and, if you want to, feel free to share your own).
Right there with you, being raised with a scarcity mindset. It has ruled my life and most of my career-related decisions, to my detriment. I'm working hard to overcome it so I can find a way to earn a living doing something that lights me up. Toward that end, I've written your money mantra on a post-it note and stuck it on a kitchen cabinet where I'll see it every day when I pull out a coffee mug.
You're very welcome Laura, I hope the mantra helps you to shift some of those stories. It's a long road, isn't it, dealing with that mindset that we are raised with? But noticing it is the first step ✨ Thank you for commenting and have a lovely rest of your week!
I love this and wish I could feel as liberated. I have two dependents and my partner does not have job security... at the moment I feel at a cross road. I have loved developing my creativity and have found ways for money to trickle in and it's steadily growing, but with my partner's consultancy about to end and two teenagers to consider I feel that I have to find a job. Very frustrated.
Ugh, yes, that is very frustrating Helen! I realise that I am indeed currently in a privileged position and that this lightness is not for everyone. I hope that you can keep your business growing in the background, nurture your creativity as you also do what right now is necessary and find a job. Sending you lots of support!
That's so kind. I don't think of it/you as privileged necessarily - you made it happen. Sometimes with the best will in the world we have to make tough decisions. If I didn't have kids, I think I'd be certain to stay on the creative route, come what may. Perhaps the best way to see it is as just a phase! The universe will probably intervene anyway so I just have to stay open to all eventualities... Thanks for your support, much appreciated.
Thanks! I really appreciated this one today. Those money messages have deep roots.
Thank you for commenting Sandy, I’m glad this resonated with you! Have a lovely rest of your day :)

me too - and hello. I love Astrid's writing too. x
Hi Helen! Good to say hellow. Hope all is well - I love the work you've been sharing on IG.

I always dread "asking" for money, even if it's mine and I earned it. I'm getting better at feeling "entitled" to what I am indeed, well, entitled to.

Thank you Jessica and I’m so happy to hear that my email made you feel calm. Wishing you much more of that calm (and health to your cat!). ✨

Yes, this is just a phase, just a season :) x
